About Denise Nelson

USDF Silver Medalist Denise Nelson is a champion rider, a professional horse trainer and developer of the Confident Rider Program.  photo DAAN Sporthorses is the preeminent Southern California stables for showing Arabians in the open circuit and breeding quality horses.

Denise competes in and trains riders for the Arabian A Circuit in Western Pleasure, Hunter Pleasure and Open Dressage.  She runs a separate division for the Hunter/Jumper discipline.  These students compete in shows all over southern California.  In 2001, Nelson’s students brought home over 30 year-end championships; including the Arabian A Circuit, Dressage Circuit, and the Hunter Division of the Southern California Horseman’s Council.

A champion rider since 1971 on the Hunter/Jumper circuit, Denise won the prestigious Tri-State Western Equitation Championship, on the East Coast.  In 1992, she began complete concentration in Dressage.  In 2003 she won first place in two categories of 2nd Level Dressage at the So. California Half Arabian Association, and Reserve Champion 2nd Level Dressage in the Region 1 Championship Arabian Horse Show at Del Mar. Denise won the 2002 Horse of the Year Award aboard the lovely purebred Arabian mare Sirada Rose VS.

Denise is the Director of Mustard Seed Ranch, a non-profit organization that links at-risk children with horses.  She has brought her Confident Rider Program, reflecting her kind and patient training methods, to Mustard Seed Ranch.  Denise, a Foster Care parent herself, is passionate about helping kids become healthy, productive adults and is thrilled to see the kids grow and change when they experience a sense of accomplishment and competence.

She was the chairperson of the 4H Advisory Committee and has run the largest 4H club in San Diego County.  She was a member of California Professional Horseman’s Association (CPHA) and currently supports the sporthorse organization of A.R.A.B.S.; she is a representative of the Arabian Discovery Farm.

While remaining an active competitor, Nelson firmly believes in training with the best of the best.  Capt. E. L. Bimburg, assistant coach of the USET from 1968 to 1972, trained her initially.  She continues her Dressage training with the FEI Coach Else Donnell of La Cresta. 

A prolific writer, her articles have been published in Riding Magazine, and she has been featured on the cover of Horseman’s News.
